This is probably one of the hardest Christian Inspiration Devotionals that I have to write because contentment falls in one of my personal “Hard to do” categories. I sit, and read, and meditate on the word, and I realize that the core of many issues in all of our lives is more than likely contentment. Think about it, without contentment, how can you love? without contentment how can you have peace, without contentment how can you have joy. Contentment will even bring about gentleness, kindness, self-control. Do these ring a bell? These are the fruits of the Spirit, and these FRUITS are all that God Desires in your life.
OK… so the question is. How do we get there? Let’s see what scripture says.
Contentment is a learned action. Philippians 4:11-12, “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have LEARNED in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound.”
I remember as a kid, and even now as an adult climbing a wooden ladder. You take the first step, and you put both feet on it.. simple… you’re up one step,
then the next, then the next. You never take the next step until you are content with the current step that you are on. The higher you get the more you have to check to make sure that step is secure (contentment).
Let me ask you this. If you can’t handle what you currently have, why would God want to give you more? Many people say “I want more money”. Let me ask you this. Are you trusting God in your current finances? Do you truly TITHE what you are currently making? Do you know that most people that win the lottery end up bankrupt. That’s because they don’t know how to handle money. We live in fear because we want more. Let’s look at some LEARNING steps of contentment.
1. God Owns It All! -Psalm 24:1 The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it
Why do we need to take hold of everything, and grasp it like someone is going to take it away from us! Contentment can be
learned as we LET GO and give it BACK to God because he is the true source of everything we have.
2. You are the manager -1 Corinthians 4:2 Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful
We are the stewards of everything we own… you see… it’s not ours, we are just supposed to take care of it. If we are not doing a good job of taking care it, why would God allow us to have more?
I figured this out the other day when anxiety was riding high! Contentment occurs where I am today and right now, contentment doesn’t look into the future and try to figure out where I want to be. I need to learn contentment right where I am, right now. I always say this. You need to “Want what I already Have”. Once you are there… Contentment will bring a PEACE and a JOY like you won’t believe!
Finally, let me say this, CONTENTMENT is CULTIVATED through a generous spirit! That’s right… if you are giving, and generous you are LEARNING contentment. Contentment will come easy as we let go and practice giving it all to our heavenly Father. I can promise you… He’s got your back!
